Electrical is a regulated trade in BC and the rules are unusually clear-cut, which makes hiring simpler than most trades if you know what to check. Work must be done by a licensed electrical contractor, and most work requires a permit through Technical Safety BC or your municipality. The permit is not bureaucratic overhead. It is what puts an independent inspector between you and a mistake, and unpermitted electrical work is a routine cause of failed home sales and denied insurance claims.

What to check before you hire, whichever company you pick.

Verify the contractor licence, not just the electrician
An individual can hold a trade qualification without the company holding a valid electrical contractor licence. Only the licensed contractor can legally pull your permit. Ask for the licence number and check it.

Insist the permit is pulled
If a quote is cheaper because 'we don't need a permit for this', you are being offered the risk, not a discount. Panel changes, service upgrades, new circuits and most renovations require one.

Ask about panel capacity before adding load
Heat pumps, hot tubs and EV chargers are the common Okanagan upgrades that quietly exceed an older panel. A good contractor does a load calculation rather than assuming it will fit.

Get the final inspection documented
Keep the permit closure. It is what a buyer's lawyer and your insurer will ask for later, and reopening an abandoned permit years afterward is expensive.
