Most municipalities here run seasonal watering restrictions, irrigation is metered in much of the valley, and the plant palette that thrives is not the one that thrives on the coast. These are three different businesses that often share a name. Be clear which one you are hiring, and whether the person designing will be supervising the build.

Ask about xeriscape and drought-tolerant planting
Not as an aesthetic preference but as the practical answer to Okanagan watering restrictions. A landscaper who cannot discuss it fluently is designing for somewhere else.

Get irrigation specified properly
Zoning, controller type and whether drip is used for beds will determine your water use for years. Retrofitting a badly zoned system costs far more than doing it right.

Confirm drainage before hardscape
