For a one-off project the differences between lumber suppliers are small; for anything sustained they are not. Contractor accounts, delivery scheduling, the willingness to hold and stage material, and whether someone will take back an overage all matter far more than shelf price. Grade and moisture content also vary meaningfully between suppliers, and warped material is expensive in labour long after it was cheap to buy.

Check grade, species and moisture
Kiln-dried versus green material behaves differently. For framing that will be finished quickly, this matters more than most buyers expect.

Agree the returns policy up front
Ordering over is normal. Whether unused material can go back, and with what restocking charge, should be settled before the order.
