Roofing is not a compulsory certified trade in BC, which means anyone can legally call themselves a roofer. That single fact should shape how you hire: since a licence is not a filter, the real filters are WorkSafeBC coverage, a written warranty that separates labour from material, and a manufacturer certification that actually obliges the installer to honour it. Okanagan roofs also take an unusual beating (intense UV and heat in summer, freeze-thaw cycling and ice damming in winter), so ventilation and underlayment details matter more here than the shingle brand does.

What to check before you hire, whichever company you pick.

Ask for a WorkSafeBC clearance letter
If a roofer is not in good standing and someone is injured on your property, the liability can land on you as the homeowner. The letter is free and takes them a minute to produce. A refusal is your answer.

Separate the labour warranty from the material warranty
Shingle manufacturers warranty the shingle; that is not the same as someone returning to fix a leak. Ask how many years of labour are covered, in writing, and whether the warranty survives if the company is sold.

Get the ventilation plan in writing
Most premature roof failures in the Okanagan trace back to inadequate intake and exhaust ventilation, not to the shingle. A quote that never mentions ventilation is a quote from someone who has not looked in your attic.

Confirm who is actually on the roof
Ask whether the crew is employed or subcontracted, and whether the person who quoted the job will be on site. This is the single biggest predictor of whether the job matches the sales pitch.
