An existing kitchen does not establish suite approval

West Kelowna’s suite guidance distinguishes a legally permitted suite from a non-permitted one. Its July 2025 bulletin says legalizing an existing non-permitted suite requires a building permit, and further upgrades may be required. The City also publishes a separate process for decommissioning a suite.

Tell the City whether you are creating a new suite or working with an existing one. For a legalization project, collect available permits and drawings before accepting a renovation quote. Ask bidders to distinguish confirmed work from allowances for changes that will only be known after the City reviews the plans.

    Collect existing drawings and ask the City about the property and proposed use. Record whether the project is a new suite or legalization of an existing space.
