1. Material in the tire treads. When a gravel truck loads at a quarry, small stones embed in the tire treads. As the truck accelerates onto the highway, these stones eject from the treads at speed — and at highway speeds, an ejected pebble is a projectile.

2. Material on the truck bed surface. Even with a properly tied tarp, residual material on the deck above the tarp, on the truck cab, and around the tailgate can shed during acceleration, deceleration, and turning.

For the vehicle behind a gravel truck at 100 km/h with a 30-meter following distance, the closing speed of an ejected pebble is approximately the highway speed plus the rotational ejection velocity. By the time it reaches your windshield, it's hitting at the equivalent of 110+ km/h.

That's enough kinetic energy to chip even tempered glass — and your windshield isn't tempered, it's laminated. Different design, different failure mode, but every bit as susceptible to chipping under highway-velocity impacts.

Why the Okanagan Is Worse Than Average

A few local factors compound the standard gravel-truck risk:

1. Quarry density

The Okanagan has more active aggregate operations per highway-kilometer than most B.C. regions. Multiple quarries between Penticton and Kelowna, several around Vernon, and major operations near Kamloops. 2. Construction season overlap

3. Highway 97 is essentially the only option

The Coquihalla bypasses much of Highway 97 east of Kelowna, but for north-south Okanagan travel between cities, 97 is essentially the only route. Drivers can't avoid the corridor; they can only manage their following distance and speed.

4. Thermal stress

Summer windshields parked in direct sun can reach surface temperatures of 60°C+. Combined with air conditioning blasting cold air across the inside surface, the temperature differential across the glass creates thermal stress that can grow an existing chip into a crack — sometimes overnight, in a parked car, with no impact at all.

Winter freeze-thaw cycles do the same thing in reverse: a chipped windshield that fills with water and freezes overnight will see the chip expand as the water expands.

What This Means for Okanagan Drivers

A few practical implications.

Following distance is the single biggest variable. The standard "two-second rule" is a minimum, not a target, behind aggregate trucks. Doubling the distance to four seconds reduces the cone of ejected material that's likely to reach your vehicle. Driving slightly offset within your lane, when safe, can reduce the probability of being directly in the ejection zone.
