Solatube vs. Traditional Skylight: An Okanagan Daylighting Decision Guide
There's a category of home improvement that's surprisingly underused in Kelowna housing despite being almost ideally suited to the local climate: daylighting. The practice of bringing natural sunlight into interior rooms that don't have windows.
Two technologies handle this work, and they're not interchangeable. - Diameter: typically 10", 14", or 21" — smaller diameters serve closets and powder rooms, larger ones serve full bathrooms and kitchens
- Length: tubes can extend up to 30+ feet between roof and ceiling using extensions
- Light output: a 14" Solatube on a sunny day delivers roughly the equivalent of 1,500-2,000 watts of incandescent light to the room
- Heat transfer: minimal — the tube design rejects most thermal energy while transmitting visible light

Powder rooms, walk-in closets, interior kitchens, hallways, stairwells, basement bathrooms — the rooms where you currently flip on a light switch every time you enter, even on bright days. Solatubes are essentially the only economical way to daylight these spaces.
2. You want daylight without a "view of sky"
A Solatube delivers light, not view. From inside the room, the diffuser looks like a recessed ceiling fixture — there's no visible roof, no apparent window. For functional daylighting where you don't actually need to see the sky, this is a feature.
3. You don't want structural modifications
A Solatube installation does not cut through structural rafters, doesn't require header framing, doesn't modify load paths in the roof. It cuts a single hole between two rafters and runs through the attic insulation. Insurance carriers and structural engineers don't need to be involved.
4. You want to avoid heat transfer
Solatubes transfer minimal thermal energy. A south-facing room with a 14" Solatube doesn't get noticeably hotter in summer or colder in winter from the installation. Traditional skylights, especially older single-pane units, are major thermal weak points.
5. You're working with a budget under $2,500
Most Solatube installations land below this threshold. Most traditional skylights start above it.
6. The roof has tar-and-gravel construction

3. The room benefits from solar gain
A south-facing skylight in a passive-solar home design can deliberately admit thermal energy in winter, contributing to heating. Solatubes specifically reject most heat — for some applications, this is the wrong feature.
4. The room has an existing vaulted or sloped ceiling structure
Vaulted ceilings often have direct exposure to the underside of the roof, with no attic between. Traditional skylights work naturally in these layouts. Solatubes can be installed but lose some of their installation simplicity advantage.
5. Budget allows for a larger architectural feature
If a daylight installation is also a design feature — visible from outside, a focal point in the room — a traditional skylight handles the design intent in ways a Solatube doesn't.
What to Ask Before Installing Either
Whether you're going Solatube or traditional skylight:
1. What's the warranty on materials and on installation labor?
2. How is roof flashing handled, and what's the leak warranty?
3. For Solatube: where does the diffuser sit relative to existing ceiling features?
4. For traditional skylight: how are structural loads redistributed?
5. Is the work weather-dependent, and what's the contingency plan if rain hits during installation?
6. Who handles the interior finishing — drywall, paint, ceiling repair if needed?
7. Are there any HOA, strata, or municipal permitting requirements?
A reputable installer will answer all of these in under three minutes.
A Common Combination: Solatube + Skylight + Attic Fan
Some Okanagan homeowners pursue all three in the same project:
- A traditional skylight in the master bathroom or bedroom (view + light)
- A Solatube in a windowless powder room (function + economy)
- A solar attic fan (ventilation, summer cooling)
