When an excavator stops in the middle of a dig, the machine is the smallest
part of the problem. The crew is standing around, the trucks booked to haul are still
coming, and if there is a float involved you are looking at a day gone and a mobilisation
charge to get the machine out and back.
On-site repair exists because moving heavy equipment is disproportionately expensive
compared with the repairs that usually stop it.
Why floating a machine is the expensive option
A lowbed to move an excavator is not a tow truck. You are paying for the float, the
permits if the load is oversize, the loading and unloading, and the return trip once the
repair is done. Then the machine sits in a shop queue. Against that, a mechanic arriving
at the pit with hydraulic hose, fittings, filters and diagnostic gear is cheap, and the
machine is usually working again the same day.
The economics only reverse for major structural or internal failures. Everything else is
worth diagnosing on site first.
What actually stops machines on site
Most of it is not exotic:
- Hydraulic hose failures. The single most common on-site machine stoppage. A blown
hose sprays, the machine loses function, and the fix is a new hose made up and fitted
where the machine sits. Carrying the wrong assumption here costs days.
- Weeping or dead cylinders. Seals go, cylinders drift. Some are on-site repairs and
some are not, but the diagnosis is always on site.
- PTO and pump problems. Loss of drive, loss of pressure, or a pump that has started
making the noise everyone recognises.
- Electrical and no-start faults. Batteries, starters, corroded connections and
chafed looms. Machines live in dust and vibration, and wiring pays for it.
- Overheating. Radiators pack with dust on a dry site. Often the fix is cleaning and
a thermostat, not a rebuild.
- Filters, fluids and service items that have quietly gone past due because the
machine has been busy.

Trucks and machines are the same call
Fleets that run both highway trucks and site machines often keep two separate numbers,
one for the trucks and one for the iron. There is no technical reason for that. Air
systems, hydraulics, diesel engines, electrical faults and driveline wear are the same
disciplines whether they are under a Kenworth or under a 20-tonne excavator, and the same
mechanic carries the same tools for both.

The number that matters is not the hourly rate on its own, it is the hourly rate
multiplied by how long the truck is off the road. A heavy tow runs into the high hundreds
before a wrench turns, and then the truck joins a shop queue behind whatever was already
booked. A mobile call that fixes the fault where the truck sits usually costs less in
total even when the labour rate is identical, because the tow never happens and the
downtime is hours instead of days.
Getting the response you need
On-site work rewards precision in the first message even more than roadside work does,
because site access is a real variable. When you call 250-974-7899, have ready:
1. The machine: make, model and roughly the year or size class.
2. What it is doing, in plain terms. "No boom function, hose blew" is enough to bring
the right hose stock.
3. Where the site is and how to get in. Gate codes, whether a pickup can reach the
machine, and whether the machine can be moved at all.
4. Ground conditions, if they would stop a service truck getting close.
5. Whether the machine is safe to work on where it sits, or needs to be brought to
flat ground first.
When it genuinely is a shop job
A mobile mechanic is not a shop on wheels, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling.
Three categories of work realistically need a building:
- Clutch replacement. The transmission has to come out, which needs a lift or a pit.
- Internal engine work. Head gaskets, in-frame rebuilds, anything past the valve cover.
- Frame and structural welding. Needs equipment and, often, an engineered repair.
The value of a mobile call in those cases is not the repair, it is the diagnosis. You
find out what actually failed before you pay for a tow, and you tow to the right place
once instead of guessing. Time spent diagnosing is time billed, but it is a great deal
cheaper than towing a truck to a shop that then tells you the same thing.
