What the summer warning actually said

On August 4, 2026, Penticton warned that residents had not yet achieved the 20 per cent reduction targeted under Stage 2 water restrictions. Earlier independent reporting in May described the seasonal water outlook and the May 1 start of Stage 2. Those are dated observations, not measurements of water demand or drought conditions today.

The City already publishes water-conservation information and describes monitoring of water use. This campaign does not claim that monitoring is missing. The question is whether residents can easily find a completed 2026 conservation-season review that connects restrictions, household effort and the resulting demand figures.

A fair comparison needs a clear baseline

A useful review would show monthly treated-water demand, the dates each restriction stage applied, and the comparison period behind any percentage reduction. It should distinguish a measured result from a target. If population, weather, supply conditions or major operational changes affect interpretation, those should be explained alongside the figures.

The municipality’s own conservation work belongs in the same account. Residents asked to change watering habits should be able to understand what happened at public facilities and how the City assessed its own measures. The result could help people prepare for next season without relying on an old warning headline.

Use this year’s evidence to prepare for next year

The petition asks Penticton City Council and its utilities team for a 2026 season review by January 31, 2027. It also asks that the findings inform the 2027 communication plan, so residents can see which requests worked and which need a clearer explanation or different approach.

This is a request for a public comparison, not a claim that residents failed, that restrictions were unnecessary, or that the City has withheld information. If an equivalent completed review is already available, Local Voices will add it to the record and revise the remaining request. Publication, delivery and any response will be dated on the campaign page.
