A traditional pool deck or patio replacement burns somewhere between four and six weeks — demolition, removal, forming, pouring, curing, and a final stamp or stain pass once the slab is workable. Why three days works (and why replacement takes weeks)

The math behind the timing is simple. A traditional concrete pour has to form the slab, pour the concrete, and wait for it to cure. The pour itself is a few hours. The form and cure are the long parts — they exist because fresh concrete takes 28 days to reach design strength and a full week before it can be walked on at all.

Day one: prep

Surface prep is the most important day of the whole project and the one homeowners least appreciate. A stone coating system is only as good as the bond between the new material and the existing slab. Get the prep wrong and the best topcoat in the world will eventually delaminate. Get the prep right and the same system will outlast the homeowners.

The first day on a Sierra Stone job runs like this:

  • Surface inspection and structural assessment. The team walks the slab and confirms it's a candidate for resurfacing.   • Mechanical surface preparation. This separates Sierra Stone from cheaper coating jobs. The slab is pressure washed at high pressure, then ground or shot-blasted to expose a clean, slightly-porous concrete surface profile (CSP-3 to CSP-4 by ICRI standards) that the epoxy primer can mechanically bond to. Day two: base coat and aggregate broadcast

  • Epoxy base coat. While the primer is still tacky, the crew trowels on a thicker layer of industrial-grade epoxy. This is the matrix the stone aggregate will sit in. It goes down at a consistent thickness across the entire slab so the finished surface is uniform.
  • Stone aggregate broadcast. While the epoxy is still wet, natural river-stone aggregate is broadcast across the surface in a controlled blanket. The amount, distribution, and pattern of the broadcast is what gives the surface its visual character — and it has to happen in the working window of the epoxy, which is usually 20 to 40 minutes per section depending on temperature. This is where experienced crews earn their pay. The aggregate distribution can't be uneven, can't be sparse, and can't pool — it has to be a consistent natural-stone field across the entire area.
  • Excess aggregate recovery. Once the epoxy has set enough to hold the stone in place, the unbonded surplus is swept or vacuumed off the surface. That recovered stone is reused on the next pour-back area or saved for future projects.
  • Initial cure. The base coat with the aggregate set into it cures overnight. By morning it's hard enough to walk on lightly for the next phase.

Day three: topcoat, slip-resistance, and clean detail

The final day is what protects everything underneath and gives the surface its working properties.

  • Aggregate inspection. The crew walks the surface and checks for spots where the aggregate is thin, uneven, or has settled differently. Any touch-ups happen here.
  • Slip-resistant texture pass. A clear texture additive is incorporated into the final coats.
